Tony was the sixth round pick of the New York Rangers in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft and is currently in his 14th season with the NHL. Tony finished third in the Calder Trophy voting in his rookie season. Prior to that Tony represented the United States in the 1988 Winter Olympics as a member of the men's hockey team.
Having played over 697 regular season career games, Tony has accumulated 242 goals, 238 assists and 1352 penalty minutes. In 62 post-season games Tony has 15 goals, 26 assists and 123 penalty minutes. In the 1996-97 season, Tony was awarded the Bill Masterson Trophy, as the NHL player who best represents "perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey", and received the Victor Award for the NHL Comeback Player of the Year and the Hockey News Comeback Player of the Year for returning to action in 1996 after having to miss the final 32 games of the 95-96 season due to a head injury which resulted in brain surgery. While a member of the Los Angeles Kings organization, Tony was twice named the team's most inspiration player. Tony spent four years playing for the Badgers at the University of Wisconsin where he was named All-WCHA twice and Wisconsin MVP after the 1986-87 season. Tony currently serves as an assistant captain for the San Jose Sharks, where he is in his fourth season.
